I. Introduction
IEC 62353 is an international electrical safety standard by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for periodic and post-repair testing of medical electrical (ME) equipment. The corresponding Chinese national standard is YY/T 0841, with the latest version being YY/T 0841-2011 (aligned with IEC 62353:2007). In 2014, the IEC released IEC 62353:2014, which remains the current version.

This article explains the key test items, precautions, and equipment requirements under the latest IEC 62353 standard.
II. Fundamental Concepts of IEC 62353
Accessible Conductive Part:
Parts of ME equipment (other than applied parts) that can be touched by patients or operators, or may contact patients via operators.
Applied Part:
Components of ME equipment that must contact the patient during normal use to achieve its function.
Leakage Current from Applied Part:
Current flowing from the mains or accessible conductive parts to the applied part.
Class I Equipment:
Devices protected against electric shock by basic insulation + protective grounding of accessible/internal metal parts.
Class II Equipment:
Devices relying on double/reinforced insulation (no protective grounding).
Equipment Leakage Current:
Current flowing from mains to ground via:
Protective earth conductor
Accessible conductive parts
Applied parts
Type F (Floating) Applied Part:
Isolated applied parts classified as:
BF Type: Higher protection than Type B (unsuitable for cardiac contact).
CF Type: Higher protection than BF (suitable for cardiac applications).
Patient Leakage Current:
Current flowing from patient connections to ground due to unintended external voltages.
Permanent Installation:
Fixed electrical connections to the mains (removable only with tools).
Protective Earth Resistance:
Resistance between accessible conductive parts and:
Mains plug’s protective contact
Power inlet’s protective contact
Permanent mains connection’s protective contact
Single Fault Condition:
Failure of one risk-reduction measure or occurrence of one abnormal condition.
Touch Current:
Leakage current from non-patient-accessible parts (equivalent to "enclosure leakage current").
Type B Applied Part:
Meets IEC 60601-1 shock protection limits (patient leakage/auxiliary currents). Not for cardiac use.
III. IEC 62353:2014 Test Items
1. Visual Inspection
Check for physical damage, contamination, or label integrity per manufacturer guidelines.
2. Protective Earth Resistance (Class I Equipment)
Test Requirements:
Non-detachable power cords: ≤300 mΩ (plug ground to all accessible parts).
Detachable power cords: ≤200 mΩ (inlet ground to accessible parts); cord resistance ≤100 mΩ; total ≤300 mΩ.
Permanent installations: ≤300 mΩ (ground terminal to accessible parts).
Multi-socket ME systems: ≤300 mΩ (TN systems without RCD); ≤500 mΩ (RCD/IT systems).
Precautions:
Use testers with ≥200 mA current at ≤24 V (1A recommended; up to 25A acceptable).
For DC tests, reverse polarity and take the highest reading.
Flex power cords during testing; resistance changes indicate damage.
3. Insulation Resistance (Optional)
Test Requirements:
Test at 500 VDC (or ≤250 VDC if overvoltage protection exists).
Measure between:
Mains and Class I earth
Mains and ungrounded parts (Class I/II)
Mains and applied parts (B/F types)
F-type applied parts and Class I/II parts
Precautions:
Disconnect from mains.
Set all switches to "ON" to maximize tested insulation coverage.
4. Leakage Current Tests
Test Methods:
Equipment Leakage Current:
Substitution method (disconnected from mains; if >1 mA, use direct/touch current method).
Direct method (mains-powered; isolate from ground except for earth wire).
Differential method (mains-powered; if >0.5 mA, use direct method).
Applied Part Leakage Current:
Test F-type parts collectively (CF types individually).
Touch Current (Permanently Installed Equipment):
Measure non-grounded accessible parts under power.
Precautions:
For Class I devices, pass earth resistance test first.
Pre-test insulation resistance before direct leakage measurements.
Correct readings to nominal mains voltage.
Multi-phase devices may exceed limits in substitution mode; use direct/differential methods.
5. Functional Testing
Verify safety-related functions per manufacturer instructions (including essential performance per IEC 60601).
IV. Test Equipment Requirements
Comply with IEC 61061, IEC 61557-2/4.
Measurement uncertainty ≤ ±15% of reading (per IEC 61557-1).
For direct leakage tests:
Ensure isolation from ground or use alarms/warnings.
Allow disconnection of protective conductors during testing.
Use sinusoidal mains frequency/voltage; for >3.5 mA tests, prevent operator contact with probes.
Report RMS values for AC leakage currents.
V. Summary
IEC 62353:2014 streamlines safety validation for ME equipment, balancing rigor and practicality. Key focus areas:
Grounding integrity
Leakage thresholds
Risk-based testing intervals
For compliance, use certified test equipment and adhere to regional adaptations (e.g., YY/T 0841 in China).
